Is teak furniture eco-friendly?

One of the most common questions customers ask us is: How do I know if the teak is sustainable? At Luxus we take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and want to reassure our customers that all of our teak furniture is legally sourced. Choosing the right material for your outdoor furniture is important because you want to be sure it's durable, resilient and know the materials used are responsibly sourced.

In this blog we look at how we source our teak and why it is so important to choose an eco-friendly supplier.

Where does the luxury teak come from?

We offer an extensive range of teak garden furniture, from garden sets to chairs, tables and loungers. All of the wood used in our furniture comes from sustainable plantations on the island of Java. These plantations are managed and owned by the Indonesian government, which has implemented a very strict and effective system for sustainable harvesting. Not only is it monitored how many trees can be felled each year, but the trees used are also selected based on their age and size. By controlling the harvest in this way, the government can effectively monitor the replanting of teak trees.

Is luxury teak legally sourced?

You may have noticed that all our teak is SVLK certified. This system is used by the Indonesian government to ensure that the teak has been harvested legally. Only teak that fully meets the guidelines set by the government can receive the SVLK certificate. Teak without SVLK certificate sold on European markets has been illegally harvested.

Is teak a sustainable wood?
The teak we use does not come from a natural forest but is responsibly sourced from government regulated plantations that reforest to ensure it is a renewable resource. These plantations work hard to ensure teak does not become an endangered species and that all trees used for commercial purposes are harvested for that purpose.

Sustainable teak at Luxus

We take our corporate social responsibility very seriously and are proud that all our teak comes from legal plantations. Illegal logging is a major problem worldwide. We hope our commitment to only sourcing sustainable teak gives you the confidence to shop with us.

Teak is an incredible material and not only do we make sure we source teak from legal plantations, but we also use teak for its many eco-friendly benefits. Teak is rich in natural oils that give it natural resistance to pests. Because of this, the plantations do not need to use insecticides or chemicals during the growing season. When manufacturing our teak furniture, we also make sure that all leftovers are recycled. Also, we only use Grade A teak to ensure our furniture is built to last.
